First it's Wednesday night and it's time to take a break from packing to choose who the necklace gets sent to...this time it was #14 which turns out to be Anilu...please e-mail me your address and it'll be off in the mail next week when I'm back home.
Speaking of e-mail I usually have blog comments e-mailed directly to me so I can answer any questions quickly, but when I'm giving something away I turn it off so my in-box isn't flooded. I noticed questions here and there the last couple of days and I won't have time to track them down before I leave so if there's anything you had a question about if you wouldn't mind e-mailing me this time it would help me so much...thanks.
So speaking of packing I realized on our little San Diego trip that I don't have a bag to go away for the weekend...I have suitcases, but not a simple duffel type bag...since I had an REI dividend check burning a hole in my pocket I decided to head over there and came home with this...
Now I just need to fill it...carefully...since I have a relentlessly compulsive inclination to pack my entire closet every time I go anywhere...you know, so I'm prepared...just in case.
Before I go though I have something to ask...my best friend from high school has a friend I've been lucky enough to get to know over the last few years and she was so kind to reach out to me in those first few weeks after losing Darby with a long, heartfelt phone conversation that I really needed at the time. She sent out a letter last week since she is working on a special project in relation to a horrifying loss she and her family experienced a year ago. I sent in what we could right now and asked her if it would be okay to post it here. Having had McIntosh ten weeks early after losing his twin I know that every medical advancement can mean the difference in survival to premature babies. When I spoke with Rebekah yesterday we talked about wanting something good to come out of her tragedy and wanting to try to save other families from the loss of a child. I told her something I know I have shared here before, that through my own losses, although they were in very different ways, I have been astounded by the kindness of the human spirit...how people want to reach out, want to help and care so deeply. So please, if you are so inclined, take a moment to read about Rebekah's pursuit and if you have anything you can offer I know it would mean the world to her and to me...thank you.
Dear Family & Friends,
Last month marked one year since delivering our precious twins. We delivered both our daughter and our son on March 2nd, 2007 & our daughter already dead at birth and our son who passed away just five minutes after his birth. Needless to say, it was a very dark and indescribably painful experience for our family.
Our son, who was born alive at twenty-one weeks gestation, was too young to be saved and therefore, never made it to the NICU. Regardless, Eric and I have decided that we would like to raise enough money to purchase a GE Giraffe OmniBed for infants and gift it to the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women a Level 3 NICU and the largest of its kind in both San Diego and Orange Counties. Ideally, the NICU should have six beds. Currently, they have only two. You can view the Giraffe Omni Bed at:
http://www.gehealthcare.com/usen/perinatal/micro_environments/giraffe/index.html
There is a significant and ongoing need to provide premature babies with the latest life-saving technology. The Giraffe OmniBed provides the most advanced, developmentally supportive microenvironment available to infants today. This technologically superior infant bed can be used as an open table warmer (called a radiant warmer) when the infant needs maximum accessibility, but can also be converted into an incubator/isolette at the touch of a button. This eliminates the need to move fragile infants from one piece of equipment to another, thus reducing stress and potential harm. The cost for a fully equipped bed is $36,500.
We understand that $36,500 is a very large sum of money. Truthfully, when we initially heard the cost, we felt defeated. We worried that we could never raise this kind of money. Then we decided that we must try! Shawna Fallon of Sharp HealthCare Foundation has agreed to support us in reaching our goal, but we need your help!
If you choose to help us with this philanthropic goal, your gift is 100% tax deductible and 100% of your donation will support the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women. Sharp HealthCare Foundation is 501(c) 3 non-profit tax-exempt status. Every amount makes a difference!
Checks can be written to: Sharp HealthCare Foundation NICU Fund #267.
By request of Sharp, please mail your check to: Whelpley Family, 1684 Lighthouse Rd., San Marcos, CA 92078. For questions or for more information, please contact Shawna Fallon, Director of Major Gifts, Sharp HealthCare Foundation, at 858-499-4820, or e-mail: [email protected].
Countless families, regardless of national origin, ethnicity, religion, marital status or socio-economic status, will benefit from the Giraffe OmniBed we hope to gift in memory of the Whelpley Twins. Together we can make this happen and give many pre-mature babies at Sharp Mary Birch a fighting chance to survive and thrive!
Thank you, sincerely and with much love,
Eric, Rebekah & Savanna Whelpley
I will try to make weekend blog posts from my phone...off to pack some more...
